The environment


The Civity family of trains is CAF’s response to the current challenge for creating clean, eco-friendly public transport systems.

Right from the initial idea for the Civity, CAF has implemented eco-design methodologies in the various engineering processes, in order to optimise and control its environmental impact throughout its life cycle. As a result of these efforts, CAF has developed a verified EPD® (Environmental Product Declaration) for the electric Civity used in the Friuli Venezia Giulia region.

Ecology on the move

The materials used to manufacture the Civity were selected to comply with its functional and technical requirements, whilst also taking account of recyclability and facilitating end-of-life dismantling. Civity achieves high recyclability rates of nearly 94%*.

In addition, joins between parts made up of different materials are reversible, facilitating dismantling and subsequent reuse at the end of the useful life of the train. The recyclability rate lies at over 98%.

Advancing in energy efficiency

The design and technology behind the Civity ensure optimal energy efficiency. Its sophisticated aerodynamic design, lighter weight thanks to shared bogies, efficient braking system, the optimisation of the number of seats per unit, driving aids and the use of lighter, more resistant materials are all key to achieving this goal.

Environmental impact

With a focus on Life Cycle, reductions in costs and the environmental impact of operations were the main objectives of the Civity design process. A low specific energy consumption per passenger has been achieved thanks to the fact that the train is lightweight and has a high carrying capacity.

Thanks to the modularity and standardisation of the solutions employed, based on components offering high levels of reliability and durability, maintenance costs are low and few spares are required.

Likewise, considerable reductions have been made in Civity's vibrations and noise emissions to minimise negative effects on the ecosystem. In compliance with the latest environmental standards, the materials used to manufacture this train reduce the atmospheric emissions of CO2.
